Résumé
The arrangement of words into phrases, clauses, and sentences is examined with a particular emphasis on contraventions of accepted syntactic norms in contemporary American English, including pleonasms and other such marginal phenomena. What emerges in more than one case is the tension between grammar and praxis that is an inevitable feature of the syntax of any language.
