Résumé

Style is explicitly taken to be a general cognitive category affecting all levels of language, from phonetics (including intonation) through word choice, syntax, and discourse structure. The lexicon of contemporary English in particular provides many examples for analyses that span the entire spectrum of speech and speaking, including even verbal tics. As elsewhere, gender differences—between male and female speaking styles—are highlighted wherever relevant.
