Résumé

The sounds of English, as of any language, encompass both phonetics and phonology. This chapter explores and examines in detail how contemporary speakers of American English often make mistakes by comparison with normative speech, including placement of stress on the wrong syllable. Examples of similar phonic data from other languages (mainly Russian and Japanese) are adduced as useful comparisons and contrasts.
