Saving science from scepticism
pp. 297-323
Résumé
This paper was to have had a motto, but John Watkins got in first. One of the two mottoes of his Science and Scepticism is "We have to try to adopt a highly critical attitude towards those theories which we admire most" (Karl Popper). I admire many of the theories of Science and Scepticism: difficult problems are confronted head-on and considerable ingenuity goes in to solving them. But I must say no more in that vein. Instead I must follow the exhortation in Watkins' motto, which was to have been mine too.
