Toward a critical theory of stories

Shari Stone-Mediatore

pp. 67-94

Résumé

The Arendtian account of storytelling that I have presented in the last two chapters helps to justify the narrative work that is now increasingly common across the disciplines. In effect, while various legal scholars, philosophers, sociologists, and historians have begun to pursue their work through telling stories, Arendt helps to explain why we need such stories: Although not a replacement for theory or empirical data, stories have an irreplaceable function of their own insofar as they sensitize us to yet untheorized human and historical significances of political phenomena while they promote continual, inclusive discussion of those phenomena.
