In his philosophy of language Gottlob Frege strives to present the basic structure of language which is supposed to correspond to the structure of what is referred to. He makes a distinction between proper names, which refer to objects, and function-names, which refer to functions. Function-names include concept-words and relation-words, which stand for concepts and relations, respectively. Frege also assumes that, besides a reference (Bedeutung), each name has a sense (Sinn), through which the name is directed to its reference.¹
