The present essay begins with a mapping of the types of pain endured by women in a patriarchal structure, and the efforts made to transform the situation and reduce negative forms of pain as well as covert and overt suffering. Justice is commonly invoked as a remedial measure for woman's pain. Two approaches to justice have been discussed: "Justice as sameness", which is a pro-status quo theory, and "justice as difference" which is a revisionary theory. Each system of justice gives rise to its own pain. One such problem is woman's lack of means for communicating her needs. The inability to make oneself understood is a major source of pain. Having discussed the taxonomy of pain as located in the context of patriarchy and as located in some of the remedial measures, an account of a few classical explanations of woman's oppression such as those given by Engels, de Beauvoir, Tagore and Freud have been stated in the hope that identification of the problem may lead towards solutions.
