The first task in seeking to understand Heidegger's work is, as Poeggeler has reminded us, "... first to hear the one question meditated on by Heidegger."¹ This question is the question of being (die Seinsfrage). I shall here attempt an exposition of this question as construed by Heidegger at and around the time of the publication of Sein und Zeit.
