Husserl and Brentano

Robin Rollinger

pp. 13-67

Résumé

While the definitive influence which Brentano had on Husserl certainly calls for a thorough-going study of the relation between them, the present chapter will be concerned with this relation only insofar as it is relevant to Husserl's relation to other Brentanists. The discussion here is nonetheless a rather lengthy one, since it provides the indispensable background for subsequent chapters. Besides some biographical information about Brentano and Husserl as his pupil, some of the doctrines which Husserl learned from Brentano and Husserl's development of alternative views will be discussed. The opposing views in question will moreover be ones which are espoused in the Logische Untersuchungen or closely related texts.
